Have you ever filled out a medical information form at the doctors office and questioned the state of your own health? I have. Before regaining my health, I would sit and stare at the patient information page wondering how I would describe all the seemingly innocuous symptoms that would occur at one time on some days and mysteriously disappear the next, like my aching hip, brain fog, bloated belly, joint pain, constipation, fatigue, indigestion, and insomnia. I'd wonder how I could describe it all in one word.
These days, on the rare occasion that I fill out a form that asks about my current state of health, my response is always the same. (This cracks the doctors up every time.)
"What is your current state of health?" The form asks.
My answer in big bold caps is always the same: STELLAR!
I never leave out the explanation point because, hey, I'm feeling good on this end and I love letting my doctors know, that it's not because of them.
Since coming out on the other end of chronic illness, I take great pride in my health because I know what it feels like to lose it. You see, as much as I respect doctors and science, and as valuable as these practices are to humankind, doctors fall short in knowing the cause of autoimmune disease and how to treat. I know this because I have personally been misled for years in how to treat my autoimmune symptoms, and I'm not the only one! What's more, medical doctors aren't adept, nor have the time, to school their patients on the powerful healing effects of nutrition.
The truth is, by the time you visit your doctor's office, you are likely exhibiting symptoms of disease. By this time damage control will likely include lots of guessing, medication and perhaps recommended procedures and hospital time.
You don't want that.
I'm here to tell you there's another way -- a simpler, long term way to heal. As a Board Certified Holistic Nutrition and Natural Healing Practitioner, an Author and a trained cook. I know about the healing powers of food. I know about selecting the freshest organic ingredients impossible and how this improves overall health. At the same time, I respect food as both the cause of disease and as a major catalyst in regaining your health.
Respect is a big issue for me as I'm sure it is for you. Fundamentally, respect for one's self and one's health is unsurpassed when it comes living the life you deserve. When you respect your body, treat it like the marvel that it is, and give it what it needs to thrive, you will feel empowered and experience success in every level of your life!
Aside from food training, I have also written for children. What most people don't know about me as a story teller is I tend to work my stories backward. That means, I often know the ending of my motivating children's stories before I write the beginning. Somehow, if I work backward, I can ensure that every line I write, leads to my intended outcome. For me, it helps with the story building.
Why am I telling you my writing secrets? Because they're similar to your health habits. Whether we realize it or not, when it comes to our health, we tend to do the same thing--we think backward. Once we have gained too much weight or shown symptoms of illness or disease, once we feel awful, we begin thinking back on how we got to this place. We backtrack.
"Have I eaten the wrong foods?"
"Could I have exercised more?"
"Have I let my <put your stressor here> get the better of me?"
Get the idea? We work backward to understand how we lost our health. See where I'm going with this?
The happy ending is, thinking backward can be an advantage! In thinking backward, when we envision our healthier selves, create a goal to regain our health, and we can begin to work toward it. Once we have the vision of health, and we can see what we want, it's easier to take the steps necessary to make it happen.
So you see backward thinking isn't so bad.
What's bad is the sad fact that America is becoming fatter and sicker than ever. Waistbands are expanding and nutrition is declining. So is our collective health. This is the obesity paradox that plagues our families, and leaves Americans fat, fed and malnourished.
How can America be obese and malnourished? Fast and processed foods. Fast and processed foods contain ingredients the body works against: sugar, salt, GMOs, pesticides MSG, and harmful additives. Poor eating habits, overeating and continual ingestion of fast and processed foods and refined s set the stage for disease. The real question is, will you live a life of damage control or will you live a life of disease prevention and health? The choice is yours.
Health is generally a matter of education over medication. Living the processed food life is the road to doctor visits, scans, tests, blood work and all the things that rob your life. This road makes Big Med and Big Pharma rich and it makes you a life-long customer. Your resulting bad health will cut into your family time, your work time, your play time, your vacation time and your lifetime.
That's not living.
I'm here to say the intention of prevention always pays off. Your amazing human body has an astounding ability to heal itself, reverse illness and thrive on levels you can only imagine. It's your responsibility to tap into that resource and give your body what it needs to tap into its highest state of health! Nutrition is key.
Why is nutrition so important to healing? (Refer again to the quote at the top of this page). According to the CDC, In 2011, more than one-third (36%) of adolescents said they ate fruit less than once a day, and 38% said they ate vegetables less than once a day. In addition, 38% of adults said they ate fruit less than once a day, and 23% said they ate vegetables less than once a day. It's time to take your natural health back.
